Requirements<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2d66e85 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2d66e85\" data-element_type=\"widget\" id=\"requirements\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">CASTRO is a space for alternative learning based in Trastevere, Rome.<\/span><\/strong><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">The CASTRO Studio Program is a 5 months long non-accredited educational programme which hosts a group of artists and researchers, offering workspace and free tuition from international artists, writers, curators and theorists. Amongst the activities are: tutorials, group tutorials, workshops and seminars, CRITS, studio visits, guided tours of Rome, Open Studios. The group of students is selected via open call by an international selection panel which changes every year.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">CASTRO fosters collaboration, experimentation and peer-to-peer learning. Each year&#8217;s program is tailored to the interests and practices of the students, fostering a dynamic environment where individual and collective pursuits intersect. Furthermore, the program serves as a platform for connecting with local realities, practitioners and organisations, facilitating exchanges that enrich both the students and the broader community. In exchange for participation, students are encouraged to take an active role in planning activities and shaping the program. Applications are welcomed from artists and researchers working with any kind of practice, approach and media. We are looking for people who are eager to experiment with alternative modes of education, open to trying out different ways of learning, questioning and unlearning, and that are committed to creating, facilitating, and nurturing collaborative and supportive work environments at CASTRO and beyond, actively engaging with the broader community<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>PREREQUISITES<\/b><\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><strong>Good knowledge of the English language.<\/strong> <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">All the Program activities will be in English.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Presence for the whole period of the Program. <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Students are expected to live in Rome and participate in all of CASTRO\u2019s weekly activities.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Collaborative disposition. <\/span><\/strong>Candidates must demonstrate a significant interest in collaborative working contexts.<\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Drawn to Rome. <\/span><\/strong>Candidates must be able to demonstrate the importance of a Studio Program in Rome to their practice; they must be enthusiastic about the opportunity to share the experience with the CASTRO community.<\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><strong>There are no age restrictions<\/strong>. <\/span>However, the educational Program is recommended for artists looking for pedagogical guidance.<\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>No academic qualifications required.<\/strong> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the research trajectory of applicants must demonstrate a high level of quality and motivation.<\/span><\/span><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f0c3dd0 e-flex e-con-boxed qodef-elementor-content-no e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"f0c3dd0\" data-element_type=\"container\" id=\"program\" data-core-v316-plus=\"true\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e3465d2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"e3465d2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">2. Program outline<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cc998bf elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"cc998bf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students for the <strong>CASTRO Studio Program<\/strong> are chosen by a Selection Panel of high level professionals in the arts, who are invited to select a cohort of people <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who show the potential to work effectively as a group.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2026 we will award 5 fellowships. Each fellowship covers the program costs and studio costs for one participant or collective.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Selected students are offered <strong>a studio, educational activities and pedagogical guidance<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is important to note that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the studio is intended only as a workplace<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it is not possible to live at CASTRO. Selected students must find their accommodations independently.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Educational activities and tutors change each year and are planned together with <strong>an Academic and Artistic Advisor<\/strong> on the basis of the selected students&#8217; practices. The program comprises a series of mandatory activities, such as <strong>tutorials, crits, workshops and seminars, and a series of optional activities.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collectives are welcome to apply, but please bear in mind the studio size is similar for both singular and collectives. The studios at CASTRO are shared studios, the sizes vary between 8-15 square meters, and they are allocated depending on needs and type of practice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><strong>Mandatory activities:<\/strong><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2192 A series of <\/span><b>workshops and seminars<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, planned based on the students\u2019 interests and practices, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to provide theoretical and critical insights.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2192 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monthly one-on-one <\/span><b>tutorials with a mentor<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, offering personalized guidance throughout the residency<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Mentor changes each year and is chosen on the basis of the selected students\u2019 practices.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2192 Regular <\/span><b>individual meetings <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with the CASTRO Team to discuss and plan a number of educational activities (i.e. studio visits, field trips, group tutorials and CRITS)\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2192 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Participation in <\/span><b>CRITS<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, public presentations in which artists present their work and offer it to a collective discussion, getting feedback in a group context.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2192<\/span><b>Group tutorials<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to foster collaboration and exploration of research topics<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2192 At least 3 <\/span><b>studio visits<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with local and international artists, curators, gallerists, collectors, writers and a variety of other professionals involved in contemporary art.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2192 <\/span><b>Open studios<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the end of the program.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Participation to <strong>at least 80%<\/strong> of the mandatory activities is required in order to complete the program.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During their stay at CASTRO, students may suggest organizing <strong>educational events<\/strong> such as talks or reading groups, either to share their practice or as a further research tool itself.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CASTRO Team will evaluate the proposals, agreeing on the possible budget and the modalities of the event.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A temporary calendar will be shared by the Team upon arrival although, as the program is constantly revised in accordance with the students\u2019 interests, most activities are set or confirmed as it runs. Therefore the program is incompatible with other full-time or part-time educational programs. A deposit of 200,00 \u20ac must be covered by the selected students which must be paid on confirmation of participation in July 2024.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>VISA<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CASTRO is an independent educational program and therefore does not offer formal certifications nor can deal with VISA applications. All applicants are expected to live in Rome for the full length of the Program.
