AMERICAN FRIENDS OF CASTRO PROJECTS

2025 marked the launch of American Friends of CASTRO Projects, a network established to extend CASTRO Projects’ mission internationally. Through fundraising efforts, cultural events, and partnerships with institutions in the United States, American Friends of CASTRO Projects aims to provide additional support for artists participating in the program and foster dynamic transatlantic dialogue and collaboration in the arts.

On Monday, May 12, in NYC, the Italian Cultural Institute will host an event with CASTRO Projects featuring Gaia Di Lorenzo, Founder of CASTRO Projects and Board Chair, in conversation with renowned curator and cultural strategist Vittorio Calabrese. 

Together, they will discuss CASTRO Projects’ mission and pioneering approach in radical education for emerging artists and its impact on the contemporary art scene including new opportunities with the American Friends of CASTRO Projects initiative.

BOARD MEMBERS

Salvatore La Spada - Chair of the Board


Dr. Salvatore LaSpada is an internationally recognized leader in strategic philanthropy with expertise in working with ultra-high net worth families from North America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia in defining mission and focus, developing strategy, and designing inter-generational leadership transitions. Previous affiliations include the Brazil Office of the Ford Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation, the Al Nahyan Foundation (the foundation of the Royal Family of Abu Dhabi) where he was founding Executive Director, and the Institute for Philanthropy in London where he was CEO. In the academic arena, he was a visiting lecturer at the University of Bologna’s Masters in Philanthropy program and a Visiting Senior Fellow of the IDEAS Centre at the London School of Economics. In addition, he was a Fellow at the London-based Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts/RSA and is a lifetime member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He is a co-founder of AFOCASTRO, founder of the Fund for Emerging Artists-Italy, and is a Trustee of the R and G Naftali Foundation and the Foundation for Child Development. He resides in New York and Rome.

Gaia Di Lorenzo - Vice Chair of the Board


Gaia Di Lorenzo is an artist and educator based in Rome.

Her research revolves around collective behaviours and their role in self-identification processes. 

Gaia holds a BA in Literature and Philosophy from the University of Tor Vergata and a BFA from Goldsmiths University of London.

Among her exhibitions: in 2024 Offendicula, Kora, Castrignano dei Greci; in 2022 ITALICS, Monopoli curated by Vincenzo De Bellis; Persona, ADA, Rome; in 2021 MATERIA NOVA curated by Massimo Mininni at the Gallery of Modern Art in Rome; Una Boccata d'Arte, Puglia curated by Bruno Barsanti, Elpis Foundation and Galleria Continua.

She has been a visiting tutor at the Academy of Fine Arts of Rome and Milan. She is the representative of the Minister for Culture on the Board of Directors of the Michetti Foundation.

In 2018 Gaia founded CASTRO, an experimental learning program based in Rome.
Gaia is a founding member of ART WORKERS ITALIA, an association created with the aim of giving voice to contemporary art workers in Italy.

Both activities, that for CASTRO and that for AWI, parallel to his artistic practice reflect her interest in collective dynamics and the role of the artist in contemporary society.

Anna Silvia Tinelli - Secretary of the Board


Anna Silvia Tinelli is a Lawyer at DLA Piper. She focuses her practice on tax law, and in particular on national and international tax profiles, patent box, transfer pricing and VAT matters. Moreover, she has assisted several clients on the voluntary disclosure procedure.

Stella Scarpellini - Treasurer of the Board


Stella is a Director in UBS’s Investment Banking M&A team, where she has worked on >$20bn worth of transactions over the past 7 years. She holds a MSc in Global Governance and Diplomacy from the University of Oxford and a BA in International Relations from King’s College London. Originally from Italy, she speaks English, French and Spanish and has travelled to 65 countries. Stella is passionate about emerging art and artists, who she collects. She’s also a trained yoga teacher and in her free time enjoys camping in remote locations and climbing high altitude peaks, including Kilimanjaro (5,895m) and Cotopaxi (5,897m).

Michaela Tupini

Michaela Tupini has built her career working alongside founders, operators and investors within the Technology and Hospitality sectors. She started her career working in Venture Capital, at both Institutional and Corporate firms across Silicon Valley, gaining experience in fundraising and the execution of impactful investments. Upon moving to New York she was Chief of Staff at APICII, a bespoke hospitality design and operations firm. There she helped execute the creative visions of chefs, designers, hoteliers and restaurant owners. She assisted in the opening of a number of properties, from private membership clubs, bars, and mixed-use properties. Michaela currently works at HSBC as Vice President of Venture Debt, providing financing options to some of the world’s most innovative startups. Michaela works and lives in Brooklyn, New York.
