Self Initiated Institutions: artists-run platforms

Ginevra Ludovici in conversation with Fabiola Fiocco

Monday 15 December 2025,18:00 -19:30
@ CASTRO, Vicolo dell'Atleta, 21

On December 15, at CASTRO, curator and researcher Ginevra Ludovici will present for the first time the results of the research she has conducted over the past year and a half on artist-founded and artist-run educational platforms.

Starting from the project Self-initiated Institutions: Artists-run Educational Platforms, Ludovici will be in conversation with researcher Fabiola Fiocco, sharing questions, methods, and outcomes from an investigation that explores the growing role of pedagogy within contemporary art practices.

Developed through fieldwork and a comparative approach, the research examines three international educational platforms — The Mountain School of Arts (Los Angeles), Materia Abierta (Mexico City), and the Institute for Postnatural Studies (Madrid) — analysing their objectives, organisational structures, and sustainability models, while highlighting their institutional, political, and community dimensions.

The talk will offer an opportunity to discuss how these experiences contribute to rethinking the role of the artist, the very idea of the institution, and the ways in which knowledge is produced and transmitted today.

The event is part of Ginevra Ludovici’s research project Self-initiated Institutions: Artists-run Educational Platforms, supported by the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Culture as part of the Italian Council programme (13th edition, 2024).
