From September to December 2021 CASTRO will host a set of seven public lectures devised and held by Adrienne Drake, director and curator at Fondazione Giuliani for contemporary art in Rome. The course will focus on alternative experiences throughout history of art pedagogy, from the second half of XX century up to actual cases.

SUMMARY:
There are historic moments in art communities when visionary ideas take hold and they can change the tone and tenor of art. This seminar focuses on the rise of radical art pedagogy in the twentieth century, which in turn contributed to the fostering of experimental community, interdisciplinary and socially engaged art. The Seminar will examine this trajectory through specific case studies, beginning with radical, revered learning institutions like the Bauhaus and Black Mountain College, to self-organized platforms outside of institutions. Particular attention will be paid to the oft-overlooked role of women artists, and alternative non-Western histories, collective labour, and how the production of alternative communities can bring
about artistic, intellectual and social change.
