From September to December 2021, CASTRO will host a series of seven public lectures designed and led by Adrienne Drake, director and curator of the Giuliani Foundation for Contemporary Art in Rome. The course will focus on alternative experiences in the history of art pedagogy, from the second half of the 20th century to specific case studies.

SUMMARY
There are historical moments in artistic communities when visionary ideas take root and can change the tone and nature of art. This seminar focuses on the rise of radical art pedagogy in the 20th century, which in turn contributed to the promotion of experimental, interdisciplinary, and socially engaged artistic communities. The seminar will explore this trajectory through specific case studies, from radical, venerable learning institutions like the Bauhaus and Black Mountain College to self-organized platforms outside of institutions. Special attention will be given to the often-overlooked role of women artists, alternative non-Western histories, collective work, and how it can lead to the production of alternative communities driving artistic, intellectual, and social change.

*Spaces are limited and subject to availability.
